Manchester United Sporting Director Dan Ashworth Departs After Five-Month Stint

Manchester United’s Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, has left the club just five months after his appointment, in a move that signals ongoing instability at Old Trafford.
The 53-year-old, who joined the club on July 1, 2024, and was heralded by minority owner Jim Ratcliffe as “one of the best sporting directors in the world,” oversaw a summer transfer window with expenditures exceeding £200 million.
However, despite his significant investment in the squad, Ashworth’s departure was confirmed on Sunday following United’s 3-2 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.
In a statement, the club announced, “Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement. We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during this transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.”
Ashworth’s exit comes during a turbulent season for the Red Devils. His tenure included the pivotal decision to appoint Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag in October.
Amorim’s appointment followed a dismal start to the season, with United languishing in 14th place after a 2-1 defeat to West Ham under Ten Hag’s leadership.
Since Amorim’s arrival, results have been mixed. United have managed two wins, two losses, and one draw in his first five games, leaving the team in 13th place in the Premier League with 19 points.
Ashworth’s short stint raises questions about the club’s long-term strategy. His departure highlights the challenges facing Manchester United’s leadership as they navigate a transitional period marked by inconsistent performances and heightened expectations from fans and stakeholders alike.
While the club has expressed gratitude for Ashworth’s contributions, the abrupt end to his tenure underscores the urgency for stability at Old Trafford as United seek to reclaim their place among England’s elite.
