A recent assessment by the Malawi Human Rights Commission and Nyale Institute for Sexual and Reproductive Health Governance, has exposed substantial gaps in comprehensive abortion care services in Malawi.
The report highlights financial barriers and low community awareness as major obstacles, exacerbated by stigma and misinformation that perpetuate unsafe practices.
MHRC Commissioner Boniface Massa emphasized that the assessment will promote sexual and reproductive health rights.
Juliana Kanyengambeta Mubanga, Deputy Director in the Ministry of Health, assured that the government will address the issues raised by the study.
The assessment aims to build evidence for legal and policy advocacy. Salima Namusobya, Vice President for Africa at the Centre for Reproductive Rights, stressed the importance of this exercise in promoting reproductive rights.
Malawi’s abortion laws allow for abortion under certain circumstances, such as when the life or health of the woman or girl is at risk. However, the country still faces challenges in providing safe and accessible abortion services, resulting in a significant number of maternal deaths due to unsafe abortion complications.
The government has committed to providing comprehensive and integrated sexual and reproductive health services. However, the assessment’s findings indicate that more needs to be done to address the gaps in abortion care services and promote reproductive rights in Malawi.
