MALAWI: Zomba City Council Trains Waste Collectors On Proper Waste Management

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
In an effort to improve waste management practices, the Zomba City Council has conducted a training program for waste collectors on proper waste disposal methods at the city’s dump site.
According to Busta Chiona, the city’s Director of Health and Social Services, the training covered three key areas: the circular economy, psychosocial aspects, and occupational health and safety.
Chiona explained that the training emphasized the economic benefits of proper waste management.
“We are teaching them how to manage waste effectively, as some disposable items can be a source of income. For example, collecting and recycling plastic bottles and paper can generate revenue,” he said.
The training program is a collaborative effort between the Zomba City Council, Waste Advisors, Makerere University of Kampala in Uganda, and Rotary International.
Linda Thindwa, Project Officer for Waste Advisors, highlighted the importance of recycling plastic bottles and papers, stressing the need for sustainable waste management practices.
Thindwa noted that the training will have a positive impact on the community, as it will help reduce waste and promote a cleaner environment.
“By teaching waste collectors how to properly manage waste, we can reduce the risk of disease transmission and create a healthier community,” she said.
The Zomba City Council’s initiative is part of a broader effort to address waste management challenges in the city.
The council aims to create a sustainable waste management system that benefits both the community and the environment.
By empowering waste collectors with the knowledge and skills to manage waste effectively, the council is taking a significant step towards achieving this goal.
