MALAWI: WFP Reaches Over 823,000 People With Food and Cash Assistance

The World Food Programme (WFP) says more than 823,000 people across Malawi have so far been reached with food and cash assistance as part of ongoing efforts to cushion vulnerable households from hunger and climate-related shocks.
WFP Country Director for Malawi, Hyoung-joon Lim, said the support is part of a broader national response led by the Government of Malawi and its partners to address food insecurity affecting millions of people.
He was speaking while addressing a delegation that was inspecting several projects in Blantyre.
“We are also supporting the treatment of malnourished children and mothers and providing emergency school feeding to more than 330,000 learners,” said Lim.
He explained that the assistance includes cash transfers and food distributions targeting vulnerable households, as well as nutrition support for children and pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.
Lim said the progress made so far has been possible through support from international donors, including Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Luxembourg, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, who have collectively contributed about $28 million towards the response.
However, he warned that more resources are needed to sustain and expand the interventions. WFP is currently facing a $17 million funding gap to reach about 1.5 million people with full assistance.
Beyond emergency relief, WFP is also working with the government and partners to strengthen community resilience by supporting agricultural production, providing quality seeds and fertilizer, and promoting income-genera
ting activities.
