Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government has appointed UTM Vice President for the Centre, Hellen Zalira Chabunya, as a Senior Research Fellow under its globally recognized Women and Public Policy Program (WAPPP).
The prestigious fellowship acknowledges Chabunya’s outstanding leadership and her tireless commitment to promoting gender equality, inclusive governance, and climate-resilient development across Africa.
As part of her fellowship, Chabunya will conduct in-country research in Malawi, focusing on the intersection of governance, gender, climate finance, and digital democracy. Her research will provide practical insights aimed at strengthening women’s participation in decision-making processes, expanding access to climate finance in rural communities, and promoting transparent and citizen-driven digital institutions.
In an interview on Wednesday, Chabunya said the fellowship was not just an academic honor but a platform to drive real change through evidence-based policy and innovation.
“This fellowship represents an opportunity to transform evidence into action for Malawi and the entire African continent,” she said. “My research will explore how governance systems, technology, and gender-responsive financing can be reimagined to deliver prosperity and dignity for all.”
She added that her work will also contribute to her upcoming PhD studies and support a broader regional policy agenda focused on sustainable and inclusive development.
UTM leadership has congratulated Chabunya for her achievement, describing it as a proud moment for both the party and the country. They noted that her recognition by one of the world’s leading institutions highlights the growing influence of Malawian scholars and leaders on the global stage.
Commenting on the development, a UTM spokesperson said Chabunya’s fellowship demonstrates the importance of empowering women in leadership and research.
“Her success is a reflection of what Malawian women can achieve when given opportunities to lead and innovate,” the spokesperson said.
Observers have also praised the appointment, saying it will help bridge the gap between academic research and policy implementation in Malawi’s governance and climate sectors.
