MALAWI: UTM Summons Former Leader Dr. Michael Usi To Disciplinary Committee
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi.
Dr. Michael Usi, the former leader of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), has been summoned to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee over allegations of misconduct against the party’s constitution.
Specifically, Usi is accused of mobilising UTM supporters at a government function, despite knowing that the party had terminated its coalition with the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
The party’s Director of Legal Affairs, Charles Dokera Thole, claims that Usi used the MCP’s slogan “Boma ndi lomweli” at the event, which has raised concerns about his loyalty to the UTM.
Usi is expected to appear before the disciplinary committee on December 30, 2024, to answer these allegations.
According to the letter, Usi’s actions were in direct contravention of the party’s constitution, which prohibits members from engaging in activities that may bring the party into disrepute.
The UTM disciplinary committee will investigate the matter and determine the appropriate course of action.
The development has sparked mixed reactions within the UTM, with some members expressing support for Usi, while others have criticised his actions.
The UTM’s current leadership has maintained that the party’s constitution must be respected, and that any member found to be in violation of the constitution will face disciplinary action.
Usi’s appearance before the disciplinary committee may have implications for his future within the party.
As a former leader, Usi’s actions are seen as setting an example for other party members, and any disciplinary action taken against him may serve as a deterrent to others.
The UTM has been undergoing internal restructuring and reorganisation, and the disciplinary action against Usi may be seen as part of this process.
The party’s leadership has emphasised the need for discipline and unity within the party, and has taken steps to enforce this.
