MALAWI: UTM Presidential Candidate Michael Usi Refuses To Contest Leadership Position
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The United Transformation Movement (UTM), party’s presidential candidate, Michael Usi, has announced that he will not contest the leadership position at the party’s upcoming convention in Mzuzu.
The UTM is holding its convention in Mzuzu, where four candidates – Dalitso Kabambe, Newton Kambala, Mathews Mtumbuka, and Patricia Kaliati have already signed an agreement to accept the election results.
Usi expressed concerns about potential lawlessness within the party, stating that he cannot allow the party’s laws to be broken.
He emphasised his commitment to democratic principles, saying, “As the Vice President of this country, how will people view me if I allow our party’s laws to be broken?”
Felix Njawala, UTM’s spokesperson, has not commented on Usi’s statement, despite Monday being the deadline for submitting applications to contest the convention.
