MALAWI: Transport Minister Engages Public and Private Sector CEOs on Infrastructure Agenda
By Smile Hamilton.
Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, is today meeting chief executive officers from selected public and private institutions as part of a broader stakeholder engagement drive aimed at aligning sector players with the government’s transport and infrastructure agenda.
Earlier this morning, Mhango held talks with Air Cargo Malawi Limited Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Thokozani Unyolo, who briefed the minister on the company’s operations, mandate and strategic direction within the air cargo sub-sector.
Speaking after the meeting, Unyolo said discussions centred on Air Cargo Malawi’s reform agenda, which includes plans to transform the company into a fully-fledged airline.
“Our major reform is to position Air Cargo Malawi as a fully-fledged airline, and we are already making progress towards that goal,” said Unyolo.
He disclosed that the company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Malawi Defence Force to facilitate aircraft use as part of the process of acquiring an Air Operator Certificate.
“We have signed an MoU with the Malawi Defence Force which will help us utilise aircraft as we work towards securing our Air Operator Certificate,” Unyolo said.
Unyolo further said Air Cargo Malawi is committed to generating foreign exchange and supporting Malawi’s export drive by transporting high-value goods to regional markets.
“Under the new operational arrangements, we want to support the country’s export drive by moving high-value goods to markets such as South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozam
bique,” he said.
