Police in Thyolo have arrested a 36-year-old man whose name was simply given as Mr Phiri,
for allegedly defiling his 14-year-old niece on multiple occasions.
The suspect hails from Stambuli village, Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi.
According to Thyolo police spokesperson, Rabecca Kashoti, the girl reported that the abuse began in January 2024 and continued until the uncle was caught on December 27, 2024.
The girl’s aunt caught the uncle leaving the victim’s bedroom at midnight and confronted the girl, who revealed the extent of the abuse.
The matter was reported to the Makwasa police unit, which arrested the uncle after medical examination results confirmed the abuse.
The victim had been living under her uncle’s care in the area of Senior Chief Khwethemule in Thyolo since 2021.
Kashoti condemned the incident, stating that the police will do everything in their power to ensure that justice is served.
“The police are committed to protecting the rights of children and vulnerable individuals.
“We urge anyone with information about similar incidents to come forward and report them to the authorities,” she added.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon to face charges of defilement.
If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and protection of children from abuse.
