Malawi’s football sensation Temwa Chawinga has made history after being nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or, the world’s most coveted individual football award.
At just 26 years old, Chawinga, who plays as a forward for Kansas City Current in the United States, has secured her first-ever nomination, marking a milestone both for her career and for Malawian football.
Her nomination comes after a stellar season in which she showcased exceptional goal-scoring ability, lightning pace, and consistent match-winning performances, earning her global recognition among the best in the sport.
This achievement also continues a remarkable family legacy — last year, her elder sister Tabitha Chawinga received a nomination for the same award, making the Chawinga sisters the first from Malawi to be recognised at football’s highest individual level.
Temwa’s success has been a source of pride for Malawi, inspiring many young athletes across the nation. The Ballon d’Or, awarded annually by France Football magazine, honours the best football player in the world based on votes from international journalists, national coaches, and team captains.
If successful, Temwa would become the first Malawian to lift the award, a victory that would write a new chapter in the country’s sporting history.
Fans across Malawi and beyond are now eagerly awaiting the award ceremony, which will see the continent’s brightest star compete against the world’s elite for the top prize in football.
