MALAWI: St John’s Hospital Appeals For More Support Amid Critical Infrastructure Challenges

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
St John’s Hospital in Mzuzu, Malawi, continues to grapple with deteriorating infrastructure and outdated equipment despite receiving a boost of over 7 million kwacha from the Saulos Klaus Chilima Foundation.
The donation follows a fundraising appeal made by the hospital in February, aimed at addressing urgent operational needs.
The funds will be used to repair a non-functional ambulance, which has been hampering emergency response services.
Joshua Valera, a trustee of the foundation, said the gesture was a response to the hospital’s vital role in serving Mzuzu and the surrounding communities.
Hospital Director Dr. Jessie Chihana welcomed the support, noting that the recent open day prompted several stakeholders to come forward.
However, she emphasized that much more remains to be done.
“Our infrastructure is in a poor state. Essential equipment like washing machines are no longer working, and the hospital’s general condition is deteriorating,” she said, adding: “We are grateful for the donations received, but the needs are still immense.”
