Sameer Suleman has been elected as the new Speaker of the National Assembly, after winning 135 votes against Gladys Ganda Dimba, who managed to secure 85 votes.
The election took place in Lilongwe, where Members of Parliament cast their ballots to choose a successor following the vacancy of the Speaker’s position. The voting process was conducted under the supervision of the Clerk of Parliament and witnessed by representatives from various political parties.
In his acceptance speech, Suleman expressed gratitude to Members of Parliament for their trust and pledged to lead the House with fairness and integrity. “I am deeply humbled by this confidence. I will ensure that Parliament remains a symbol of unity and a true voice of the Malawian people,” he said.
Meanwhile, fellow contestants Lasken Vigaro and Sandram Scott did not receive any votes, signaling a clear majority support for Suleman’s leadership.
Suleman, who previously served as Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, is known for his outspoken approach and commitment to accountability in government operations.
Analysts say his election marks a significant shift in parliamentary leadership and may influence the relationship between the Legislature and the Executive in the coming months.
