A Rwandan national, one Emmanuel Ndagijimana, a 40-year-old man, has been arrested by police in Dowa, Malawi, for allegedly stealing a vehicle.
According to Dowa Police Station spokesperson, Alice Sitima, the stolen vehicle is a Honda Freed DA 10595 valued at K7,990.00 (approximately USD 10,000).
It was reported that the vehicle was stolen from Dzaleka in Dowa in March this year.
“The suspect approached the vehicle’s owner, pretending to be interested in buying it, but instead drove it away,” Sitima explained.
Sitima further stated that the owner of the vehicle reported the theft to the police, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
The police are currently investigating the matter.
The vehicle was later found in Mzuzu, where it had been sold and its registration number changed.
The police have since recovered the vehicle and are holding the suspect in custody.
The arrest of Ndagijimana has sent a strong message to would-be car thieves in Malawi.
“We will not tolerate such criminal behavior in our country,” said Sitima, adding: “We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.”
The police have also appealed to the public to provide any information that may lead to the recovery of other stolen vehicles.
“We are committed to ensuring that justice is served and that perpetrators of such crimes are brought to book,” said Sitima.
Ndagijimana is expected to appear in court soon to face charges of theft.
If convicted, he may face a prison sentence, a fine, or both.
