The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) and the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) have challenged political parties in the country to embrace inter-party democracy ahead of next year’s elections.
The HRDC, in a statement issued on Sunday signed by its chairperson, Gift Trapence, condemned the suppression of dissent within political parties, stating that it undermines democratic principles.
The statement was issued as the country joined the rest of the world yesterday in observing International Democracy Day.
Meanwhile, the CCJP has challenged political party leaders to take a leading role in ensuring that inter-party democracy prevails in the country.
The CCJP National Coordinator, Boniface Chibwana reminded leaders that their commitment to inter-party democracy will help reduce political violence ahead of next year’s general elections.
