Malawi Public Affairs Committee Faces Financial Constraints Ahead Of 2025 Polls
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Malawian Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has complained that financial constraints due to lack of funding, is hindering its ability to hold all-inclusive stakeholders’ conferences before the 2025 polls.
Since 1995, the quasi-religious body has been instrumental in conducting public roundtable conferences on key national issues such as elections, politics, and the economy.
The PAC spokesperson, Bishop Gilford Matonga told African Culture TV in a phone call that efforts by the Committee to raise funds proved abortive.
He said: “Despite plans, we have been unable to secure funds to convene dialogues, particularly as the political landscape heats up.”
This has raised concerns about the potential impact on the country’s democratic processes. However, Matonga disclosed that the PAC’s 19-point advocacy resolution remains relevant for stakeholders, including political parties, to incorporate into their manifestos. This resolution was developed through successive conferences and outlines key issues that need to be addressed in the country.
Political scientist Vincent Rangel notes that the PAC’s voice and influence are crucial now, as social-economic woes and political violence escalate in the country ahead of the elections. Rangel emphasized that the PAC’s role in promoting peaceful and inclusive elections is vital.
The PAC’s financial constraints come at a critical time for Malawi, as the country prepares for the 2025 polls. The organization’s ability to convene stakeholders’ conferences has been instrumental in promoting dialogue and consensus-building in the past.
In light of the PAC’s financial challenges, there are concerns about the potential impact on the country’s electoral process. However, the organization remains committed to promoting peaceful and inclusive elections, despite the challenges it faces.
