MALAWI: President Mutharika Appoints George Partridge as Reserve Bank Governor
By Smile Hamilton
Malawi President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has appointed Minister of Trade and Industry George Partridge as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi, according to an official statement released on Friday, January 23, 2025.
Partridge replaces Dr Mafuta Mwale, who was appointed to the position by former President Dr Lazarus Chakwera during his time in office. The statement did not indicate the reasons for the change or whether Dr Mwale had completed his full term.
Confirming the appointment, the Secretary to the President and Cabinet said President Mutharika exercised his constitutional powers in making the decision. “His Excellency the President has appointed Honourable George Partridge as Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi with immediate effect,” reads part of the statement.
Partridge is expected to bring his experience in economic and trade policy to the central bank at a time when Malawi is grappling with inflation, foreign exchange shortages, and pressure on the local currency. Analysts say the new governor will play a critical role in steering monetary policy and restoring confidence in the financial sector.
As Minister of Trade and Industry, Partridge was responsible for overseeing domestic and international trade, industrial development, and private sector growth. His appointment signals a shift toward aligning monetary policy with broader economic recovery efforts.
Dr Mafuta Mwale, an economist, was appointed Reserve Bank Governor under the previous administration led by Dr Lazarus Chakwera. During his tenure, the Reserve Bank implemented several monetary policy measures aimed at stabilizing the economy amid persistent macroeconomic challenges.
The statement did not provide further details on the transition process or on Partridge’s replacement at the Ministry of Trade
and Industry.
