Police in Nkhotakota district have arrested Emmanuel Matumba, a suspect in a fuel smuggling scheme.
Matumba allegedly attempted to smuggle 19,800 liters of fuel from Mozambique into Malawi.
He has since secured the services of a lawyer to represent him in court.
According to Chisomo Chuma, Deputy Police Spokesperson, the police are working tirelessly to crack down on the smuggling ring.
“We are using all means necessary to track down those involved in the smuggling of fuel,” Chuma said.
The police have also discovered that the smuggling ring is using fake receipts and documents to disguise their activities.
The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has been working closely with the police to investigate the smuggling ring.
MERA has warned that those found guilty of fuel smuggling will face severe penalties. The police have also raided several fuel stations in the area to determine if they are involved in the smuggling scheme.
Matumba and his accomplice, Juwawo Mndala, a Mozambican national, were arrested on March 14, 2025. The police are continuing their investigation into the smuggling ring and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
