By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
Police in Jenda have arrested Isaac Mkandawire, a self-proclaimed prophet, and his accomplice, Eunice Soko, for trying to scam villagers in Zatuwa Zimba Village, Mzimba.
Speaking with Africa Culture TV, Jenda Police spokesperson Macfarlen Mseteka confirmed the arrest, saying: “The suspects used fear to manipulate people, but thanks to alert villagers, their scheme was exposed. We urge the public to be cautious of such fraudsters.”
The two suspects allegedly used a small coffin as part of their scheme, claiming it contained deadly charms meant to kill someone in South Africa.
Mkandawire is said to have demanded K350,000 from the villagers to perform prayers and remove the supposed spell.
However, their plan was foiled when a villager recognized Soko near the site where the coffin was placed.
The police noted that Mkandawire and Soko are currently in custody and are expected to appear in court soon.
