Malawi Poets Urged To Promote Unity And Tolerance Ahead Of Elections

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
As the world celebrates World Poetry Day today, Robert Chiwamba, president of the Poetry Association of Malawi, has called upon poets to use their craft to promote unity and tolerance in the country.
Chiwamba emphasized the significance of poetry in shaping public opinion and promoting social cohesion, particularly as Malawi prepares for elections in September.
“This year’s theme is highly relevant to our current situation, as our country is in dire need of unity and tolerance,” Chiwamba said. “As poets, we have a crucial role to play in promoting these values and inspiring positive change.”
The Poetry Association of Malawi has been actively promoting literary arts in the country, with support from the Copyright Fund.
Renowned poet Benedicto Wokomaatani Malunga also urged poets to take their craft seriously and strive for excellence in their work.
As Malawi approaches the September elections, the role of poets and artists in promoting unity and tolerance is expected to take center stage.
