Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri, has warned ward councillors against interfering in procurement matters in local councils, saying controlling officers must be allowed to carry out their duties professionally.
Speaking during the opening of a councillors’ orientation in Blantyre on Monday, Phiri said the primary role of councillors is to provide oversight and not to manage public funds or procurement processes.
“Run away from public money. Let us respect taxpayers’ money,” said Phiri, adding that anyone found engaging in corruption will face arrest.
Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA) President Isaac Jomo Osman called for a strong working relationship between Members of Parliament and councillors, saying cooperation between the two is key for development to flourish.
Meanwhile, NBS Bank has contributed K254 million towards the orientation programme. The bank’s Chief Retail Banking Officer, Victoria Chanza, said the institution wants newly elected councillors to clearly understand their roles and respons
