Parliament has confirmed the appointment of Richard Luhanga as the new Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service (MPS).
Members of Parliament unanimously endorsed Luhanga through a voice vote during a parliamentary session held on Thursday.
Luhanga, a seasoned law enforcement officer, previously served as Commissioner for the Northern Region before his elevation to the top post.
He succeeds Merlyn Yolamu as the head of the Malawi Police Service.
Minister of Homeland Security, Peter Mukhitho, who moved the motion for Luhanga’s confirmation, said the new Inspector General has a proven record of professionalism and integrity.
“Mr. Luhanga has served the Malawi Police Service with distinction and dedication. His leadership experience and commitment to law and order make him a suitable candidate to lead the service,” said Mukhitho.
In his brief remarks after the confirmation, Luhanga expressed gratitude to Parliament and President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for the confidence placed in him.
“I am deeply humbled by this appointment. I promise to serve the nation with honesty, fairness, and professionalism while ensuring that the Malawi Police Service remains a trusted institution,” said Luhanga.
The motion for Parliament to deliberate on the appointment was moved by Dedza Kasina Constituency legislator Joshua Malango and seconded by the Minister of Local Government, Ben Phiri.
