MALAWI: Over 1,500 People Admitted at Zomba Mental Hospital This Year
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
At least 1,527 people have been admitted to Zomba Mental Hospital between January and September this year, according to figures released by the facility.

The number represents a decrease compared to the same period last year, when 2,182 patients were hospitalized at the institution.
Hospital data shows that 75 percent of the admitted patients are men, while 25 percent are women, indicating that more men continue to suffer from mental health-related conditions than women.

The statistics were shared during a ceremony commemorating World Mental Health Day, which took place at the Zomba Mental Hospital premises.
The event began with a solidarity walk from the Zomba District Commissioner’s Office to the hospital, bringing together health workers, mental health advocates, and members of the public to raise awareness about mental wellness.
Speaking during the commemoration, hospital officials highlighted the need for more community-based mental health services to reduce the number of people being admitted to hospitals. They also urged Malawians to fight stigma and support those living with mental health challenges.
This year’s World Mental Health Day, observed globally on October 10, focused on the theme of promoting mental well-being and access to care for all.
Health experts at the event also emphasized that early intervention, family support, and public education are key to addressing the growing mental health burden in Malawi.
