By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
More than 1,000 individuals have been cleared to contest for parliamentary seats in the upcoming September 16 elections.
These candidates are expected to compete across 229 constituencies nationwide, raising the stakes in what promises to be a competitive electoral season.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is the body that released the official list of approved candidates.
MEC Chief, Annabel Mtalimanja, said the list was published in accordance with Section 44 of the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Elections Act.
Mtalimanja emphasised that all candidates had met the legal requirements and submitted the necessary documentation for their nomination to be considered valid.
Election observers have noted that the high number of candidates reflects growing political engagement among Malawians, with parties and independent candidates seeking to expand their representation in Parliament.
Authorities have also urged voters to familiarise themselves with the candidates and their manifestos ahead of the elections, stressing the importance of making informed choices at the polls.
The September 16 elections are expected to draw significant attention both locally and internationally, as the country continues to strengthen its dem
ocratic processes.
