MALAWI: Opposition Demands Withdrawal Of President Chakwera’s SONA

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has called for President Lazarus Chakwera to withdraw his State of the Nation Address (SONA) from the Hansard, Malawi’s official parliamentary record.
According to Shadreck Namalomba, DPP spokesperson, the current SONA fails to address pressing issues affecting the public.
SONA, which stands for State of the Nation Address, is a speech delivered by the President to parliament, outlining the country’s current state, achievements, and future plans.
However, the opposition party claims that President Chakwera’s SONA did not accurately reflect the nation’s situation.
Namalomba made the demand at a press conference, where opposition parties converged after walking out of parliament.
They protested President Chakwera’s arrival to respond to legislators’ questions.
Mary Navicha, Director of Women for DPP, also spoke out, calling for President Chakwera to apologize to the public, members of parliament, and constituents for allegedly exaggerating development projects in certain areas.
The opposition party’s move highlights the growing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition.
As Malawi prepares for the 2025 general elections, the debate surrounding the SONA has brought attention to the country’s ongoing challenges and the need for transparent governance.
