MALAWI: Nsanje’s Ndamera Health Center Crippled By 4-Week Power Outage As Midwives Use Torches For Deliveries
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
A faulty transformer, damaged four weeks ago, has paralysed health services at Ndamera Health Center in Nsanje District, with the maternity wing and drug store room most severely affected.
According to Ndamera Health Center In-Charge Mary Mainje, midwives rely on torches for nighttime deliveries due to the facility’s inadequate power backup system.
“The lack of a cooling system is damaging drugs and vaccines due to unfavorable temperatures,” Mainje explained.
Local businessman Bashir Ramozan Mahomed expressed frustration, stating that the outage has negatively impacted his business at Ntowe market.
In response, Escom Public Relations Manager Kitty Chingota acknowledged the issue, stating that procurement of a 500 kVA transformer is underway, with installation expected as soon as procedures are finalized.
“We are working to resolve the issue in the shortest time possible,” Chingota assured.
