Malawi: Mutharika’s Office Warns Against Illegal Acts In Government
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Office of President-elect Professor Peter Mutharika has issued a stern warning to some senior government officials accused of abusing their positions and breaking the law during the ongoing transition of power.

Speaking in Lilongwe, the spokesperson for Mutharika’s office, Shadric Namalomba, said it has come to their attention that some officials are taking advantage of the period of change in government to engage in corrupt practices.
According to Namalomba, the alleged activities include offering government jobs illegally, making fraudulent payments, and engaging in nepotism by promoting allies to positions of power without following proper procedures.
“We are aware that some officials are using this transition period as an opportunity to enrich themselves and secure undue advantages,” Namalomba said. “Let me make it clear that this administration will not recognize any appointments or financial decisions made in violation of the law.”
He further stressed that all irregular decisions and transactions made during this period will be reversed once the new government fully assumes office. “We will not tolerate lawlessness. Those found to have been involved will face the full consequences of their actions,” Namalomba warned.
The warning comes amid growing concerns from civil society organizations and opposition parties about increased corruption and misuse of state resources during government transitions in Malawi. Analysts say such acts undermine public trust and make it harder for a new administration to govern effectively.
Namalomba assured Malawians that the incoming government is committed to transparency and accountability, promising that the fight against corruption will be among its top priorities.
