President Peter Mutharika has directed the relocation of the headquarters of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC), Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), and Malawi Prison Services (MPS) to their previous bases.

In Executive Order Number 1 of 2025, dated October 10, 2025, Mutharika instructed that the relocation be carried out with immediate effect.

According to the directive, MACRA, MEC, and MHC are to move back to Blantyre from Lilongwe, while the MPS headquarters is to return to Zomba.
The order further stipulates that the relocation process should be completed within three months.

These institutions were initially transferred to Lilongwe during the administration of President Lazarus Chakwera, a move that was then justified as part of the government’s decentralisation and modernisation efforts.
Government sources have described Mutharika’s new directive as part of his plan to restore operational efficiency and return institutions to their traditional administrative bases.
