In a bid to foster innovation and entrepreneurship, the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) has disbursed K287 million in research grants to six groups of its staff members.
This initiative is part of the university’s internal research fund, which was allocated K450 million to support staff members with promising research proposals.
According to Vice Chancellor Professor Nancy Chitera, the university’s vision is to establish itself as a leading institution in terms of innovation and entrepreneurship.
“We aim to be a standalone university in terms of funding, and this initiative is a significant step towards achieving that goal,” she said.
The research grants, ranging from K41 million to K50 million, will support diverse projects across various fields.
The beneficiaries will research solutions to reduce traffic congestion in Malawi’s cities, a pressing issue that affects many urban dwellers.
One of the grant recipients, Dr. Adamson Thengolose, Head of the Quality Assurance Department, expressed excitement about his group’s project.
“We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will enable us to explore practical solutions to traffic congestion in our cities,” Dr. Thengolose said.
“This research will not only contribute to the body of knowledge but also provide valuable insights that can inform policy and practice,” he added.
The grant disbursement ceremony marks a significant milestone in MUBAS’s commitment to promoting research and innovation among its staff.
As the university continues to support cutting-edge research, it is poised to make a meaningful impact in Malawi and beyond.
