MALAWI: Ministry Of Education Issues Disaster Alert To Southern Region Schools
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Malawian Ministry of Education has instructed all education divisions and district offices in the southern region and those along the lake shore to issue immediate disaster alerts to schools. This directive is in response to the impending Tropical Cyclone Chido, which is expected to make landfall near Nacala, Mozambique, approximately 500 kilometers from the Mulanje border.
According to a memo signed by Secretary for Education, Dr. Mangani Chilala Katundu, schools must adhere to the Meteorological department’s advisory to minimize the impact of the cyclone. The Ministry has urged schools to take immediate action, including relocating to safer areas, avoiding flooded rivers and running waters, and staying away from power lines and electrical wires.
The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) has warned that Tropical Cyclone Chido may trigger flooding, particularly in the southern regions of Malawi. The Ministry’s prompt response aims to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff in the affected areas.
In preparation for the cyclone’s landfall, the Ministry has advised schools to activate their emergency response plans. This includes identifying safe evacuation routes, designating assembly points, and ensuring that students and staff have access to essential supplies, such as food, water, and first aid kits.
The Ministry has also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their children. This includes monitoring weather updates, avoiding travel to flood-prone areas, and keeping children indoors during heavy rainfall and strong winds.
In addition, the Ministry has assured the public that it is working closely with other government agencies, such as the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), to coordinate relief efforts and provide support to affected communities.
The Ministry’s swift response to the impending cyclone demonstrates its commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and staff in Malawi’s education sector.
