Malawian Minister of Labour, Vitumbiko Mumba, has warned employers who have not been paying workers’ salaries that they will face the law.
Mumba made these remarks on Wednesday in Lilongwe during a meeting with senior officials from various districts, including Mzuzu and Zomba.
Mumba stated that the main objective of the meeting was to remind employers of their obligations and to ensure that workers’ rights are respected.
Regarding the issue of unpaid salaries, Mumba said that the government has given employers a deadline to pay their workers by the end of December this year.
Steve Magombo, a labour officer in Lilongwe, welcomed Mumba’s warnings, saying that employers who have been failing to pay their workers will now be forced to do so, which will help to improve the working conditions of employees.
