The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) National Executive Committee (NEC) has thrown its full support behind the party’s president, Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, in a move aimed at consolidating leadership and restoring unity within the party following its loss in the September 16 General Elections.
MCP Publicity Secretary Jessie Kabwila said the NEC meeting, held in Lilongwe today, reviewed the setbacks that led to the party’s defeat and outlined a clear path forward.
“The NEC has reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of Dr Chakwera. We have discussed the challenges that contributed to our loss and agreed on strategies for rebuilding. The Malawi Congress Party remains united and focused on renewal and progress,” said Kabwila.
She added that the party is committed to strengthening its structures across the country.
“We are moving forward with one spirit and one purpose — to rebuild and strengthen the MCP. Unity cannot be forced; it must come from a shared vision and commitment to the values that define us,” she emphasised.
However, political analyst George Chaima advised the MCP to use this period for honest reflection.
“If the party wants to bounce back in 2030, it must reflect seriously on its leadership style and reconnect with grassroots supporters,” said Chaima.
