MALAWI: Maseko Ngoni Heritage Trust Speaks Out Against Bushiri’s Extradition Amid Controversy Over South African Court’s Decision

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Maseko Ngoni Heritage Trust has joined the growing list of groups opposing the extradition of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, to South Africa.
In a letter to the Attorney General and the Office of President and Cabinet, the trust’s secretary general, Impi Kandi Padambo Ndau, expressed concerns about the couple’s potential treatment in South Africa, citing fears of unjust treatment and humiliation.
Recall African Culture TV reported that Bushiri’s case has been a topic of discussion, with many questioning the circumstances surrounding his alleged crimes. The TV platform highlighted the story, shedding light on Bushiri’s contributions to Malawi and the controversy surrounding his extradition.
Prophet Shepherd Bushiri is a prominent Malawian businessman and self-proclaimed prophet who founded the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church. Born on September 20, 1963, Bushiri rose to fame in Malawi and beyond for his charismatic leadership and alleged prophetic abilities.
In 2020, Bushiri and his wife, Mary, fled South Africa to Malawi amid allegations of financial crimes, including fraud and money laundering. The South African government subsequently requested Malawi to extradite the couple to face charges.
Bushiri’s case has been ongoing in Malawi, with the couple’s lawyer arguing that they should not be extradited to South Africa. The Malawian courts have been deliberating on the matter, with some arguing that Bushiri’s human rights may be compromised if he is extradited.
A South African court has granted the National Prosecuting Authority permission to sell Bushiri’s private jet, valued at R50 million. The NPA claims the jet was purchased with proceeds from unlawful dealings and will use the funds to compensate alleged victims. Bushiri questions the NPA’s decision, citing his reimbursement of over R70 million to victims of a forex investment platform scam introduced to his church.
The situation continues to unfold, with many watching to see how the Malawian government will respond to the concerns raised by the Maseko Ngoni Heritage Trust and other groups opposing the extradition. The case has sparked debate about the rule of law, international agreements, and the treatment of citizens in foreign jurisdictions.
