Farmers in Machinga District are expected to harvest high crop yields if favourable weather conditions and steady rainfall continue up to March.
Machinga District Agriculture Officer Raphael Mkisi told African Culture tv that the district is currently experiencing good weather and rainfall, giving hope that farmers will record increased maize and rice production.
“Currently, the district is receiving favourable rains, and we are optimistic that farmers will harvest good yields of both maize and rice,” Mkisi said.
One of the farmers in the district, Patuma Kandulu, said the crops in their fields are showing promising signs and that they expect to harvest more food than last year.
“The crops are doing very well, and we are hopeful that this year’s harvest will be better than last season,” Kandulu said.
Agriculture expert Tamani Nkhono Mvula has, however, cautioned farmers to continue managing their fields properly and to report any disease outbreaks or pest attacks to agricultural extension officers for timely assistance.
“Even though there are positive indications, farmers must take good care of their fields and promptly report any challenges so that they receive help in time,” Mvula said.
Machinga District is among the districts that experienced severe food shortages last year, forcing some households to survive on wild tubers due
to lack of food
