Malawi: LPG Shortage Sparks Concern Among Users And Environmentalists
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
Some Malawians who rely on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for cooking have expressed concern over the continued scarcity of the commodity in the market, which has now lasted for nearly a month.
They are urging authorities to urgently address the issue.
The users say the situation is frustrating, especially in light of ongoing campaigns by clean energy advocates encouraging people to switch from charcoal and firewood to more environmentally friendly cooking alternatives.
However, Ministry of Energy spokesperson Austin Theu has attributed the shortage to the ongoing foreign exchange crisis, which is hindering the importation of LPG into the country.
Meanwhile, environmentalist Charles Bakolo has warned that the prolonged scarcity of LPG could undermine efforts to conserve forests, as more people may be forced to return to using charcoal and firewood for cooking and heating.
