Malawi Law Society Urges President Chakwera to Intervene in Emerging Political Violence
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Malawi Law Society (MLS) has called on President Lazarus Chakwera to take immediate action to address the growing political violence in the country.
This comes after reports of armed men chasing protesters who were demonstrating against fuel scarcity in the capital city of Lilongwe.
According to Patrick Mpaka, President of the MLS, the society is concerned about the escalating violence and its impact on the country’s peace and stability.
Mpaka reminded Chakwera that, as the President, it is his constitutional duty to ensure that peace and unity are upheld in the country.
The MLS’s call for intervention is timely, given the recent incidents of violence that have been reported in Lilongwe. The government’s silence on the matter has been deafening, and it is imperative that Chakwera takes immediate action to address the situation.
The MLS has consistently advocated for the rule of law and the protection of human rights in Malawi. As an umbrella body of legal practitioners in the country, the MLS is well-placed to provide guidance on matters of constitutional law and human rights.
In a similar vein, the MLS has previously urged Chakwera to appoint a new Vice President within the timeframe stipulated by the constitution. The society has also called for the President to adhere to constitutional procedures when making appointments.
The MLS’s call for intervention in the emerging political violence is a stark reminder of the need for the government to take decisive action to protect the rights and freedoms of citizens.
As the country prepares for the 2025 elections, it is imperative that the government ensures that the electoral process is free from violence and intimidation.
