MALAWI: Landslide Disrupts Operations At Mchenga And Chombe Coal Mines

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
A landslide triggered by heavy rain has damaged essential equipment at Mchenga Coal Mine, disrupting mining operations at the site.
Adams Kasambala, the Safety, Health, and Environmental Officer at Mchenga Coal Mine, confirmed to VoL that the landslide damaged a section of the conveyor system and a front-end payloader—both critical for haulage operations.
Kasambala said the incident occurred Tuesday between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, forcing the mine to halt operations at Base 5. Mining activities have since been shifted to Base 7.
He added that four workers were briefly trapped inside the mine but were rescued safely shortly after the landslide.
Meanwhile, an internal source has confirmed that Chombe Coal Mine also experienced a landslide, which damaged the compressor used in it’s operations.
