MALAWI: Labor Minister Orders Closure Of NT Plastics Over Labor Issues

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
Malawi’s Minister of Labor, Vitumbiko Mumba, has ordered the immediate closure of NT Plastics Manufacturing Limited in Lilongwe.
The company defied government orders to halt operations until it addressed its labor issues, prompting Mumba’s action.
As a result, the company’s Managing Director, Zhouh Youn Fei, has been arrested.
Mumba stated that despite the shutdown order, NT Plastics continued to operate, demonstrating a blatant disregard for the law.
“By doing this, they are trying to discard the rule of law and undermine the government of Chakwera. They will face the law to the fullest,” Mumba emphasised.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting workers’ rights in Malawi.
Mumba assured that the government will take all necessary measures to ensure that companies comply with labor laws and respect workers’ rights.
“We will do whatever we can to make sure that the workers’ rights are respected,” Mumba said.
The closure of NT Plastics Manufacturing Limited is seen as a significant step in enforcing labor laws in Malawi.
The government has been criticised in the past for not doing enough to protect workers’ rights, and this move is expected to send a strong message to companies that violate labor laws.
The labor issues at NT Plastics Manufacturing Limited have been ongoing for some time, with workers complaining about poor working conditions, low wages, and unfair labor practices.
The company’s refusal to address these issues led to the government’s decision to shut it down.
Mumba has urged all companies operating in Malawi to comply with labor laws and respect workers’ rights.
He warned that any company found violating labor laws will face severe consequences, including closure and prosecution.
