Malawi Human Rights Commission Calls For Improved Prison Conditions

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has sounded an alarm on the deplorable conditions faced by prisoners and detainees in police cells and prisons.
MHRC Executive Secretary, Habiba Ousman, recently highlighted the pressing issues of overcrowding and lack of resources, which are compromising human dignity.
In a bid to address these concerns, the MHRC organized a one-day training session in Dowa District, bringing together key stakeholders, including representatives from the police, prison authorities, and paralegals. The training aimed to raise awareness about the plight of prisoners and detainees and to explore ways to improve their living conditions.
Ousman emphasized that the situation is critical, with human rights violations a major concern. She noted that most police facilities lack sufficient food and resources, making it difficult for prisoners to live with dignity. The MHRC is determined to push for change and ensure that the rights of prisoners and detainees are respected.
Police Deputy Director of Legal Services, Kennie Mhango, praised the MHRC’s efforts, stating that the initiative will positively impact policing and encourage professionalism among police officers. This, in turn, will help build trust between law enforcement and the public.
The MHRC’s initiative is being implemented with funding from the Irish Rule of Law International. As the organization continues to advocate for improved prison conditions, many are watching to see how the Malawian government will respond to these concerns.
In a country where poverty is widespread, with over half the population living in poverty and one-fifth in extreme poverty, accessing basic needs like education, healthcare, and sanitation can be a challenge. The MHRC’s efforts are a crucial step towards addressing these issues and promoting human rights in Malawi.
