Hudson Mwakalinga, a resident of Zomba, Malawi, has taken it upon himself to design assistive technology for individuals with visual impairments. His innovative solution aims to provide independence and mobility for those struggling with visual disabilities.

Mwakalinga’s device, which utilizes artificial intelligence, provides users with real-time information about their surroundings, including obstacles, stairs, and other hazards. The device emits a sound, similar to an alarm, to alert the user of potential dangers, allowing them to navigate safely.

The innovator explains that his device is designed to assist individuals with visual impairments, providing them with independence and confidence in their daily lives. Mwakalinga’s device has the potential to revolutionize the lives of those with visual disabilities, enabling them to move freely and participate fully in their communities.

Mwakalinga has been selected to participate in the prestigious BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE) in Dublin, Ireland, in August. At the exhibition, he will showcase his innovative device and compete against other talented young scientists and innovators from around the world.

During the exhibition, Mwakalinga will also have the opportunity to receive feedback from industry experts, network with other innovators, and potentially secure funding and support to further develop his device.

However, he is facing financial constraints and is seeking support to cover the cost of his air ticket to Ireland, estimated at K7 million (approximately USD 9,000).
