MALAWI: High HIV Prevalence Among Mulanje Youths And Women Calls For Alarm

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
Authorities in Mulanje have expressed concerns over the high prevalence of HIV and AIDS among youths and women in the district.
During the World AIDS Day Commemoration and Candlelight Memorial, Whitney Kondowe, Principal Nutrition, HIV, and AIDS Officer, revealed that 13 out of every 100 youths in Mulanje are living with HIV.
Kondowe attributed the alarming statistics to harmful cultural practices and financial hardships.
Meanwhile, Chrissie Chiwanda, treasurer of the Mulanje Y+ group, praised ongoing awareness campaigns, noting a significant reduction in stigma compared to when she was diagnosed with HIV in 2003.
Chiwanda emphasised the need for sustained community support to address the epidemic and protect vulnerable groups.
She urged community leaders, parents, and guardians to play a more active role in educating youths about HIV prevention and the importance of safe practices.
The high prevalence of HIV among youths and women in Mulanje is a stark reminder of the need for continued efforts to combat the epidemic.
As the district moves forward, it is essential that stakeholders work together to implement effective prevention strategies, provide support to those affected, and promote a culture of inclusivity and understanding.
