A 27-year-old mother, Rabecca Adam, and her 9-year-old son, Likisani Daniel, were trampled to death by a herd of four elephants in Salima District.
According to Salima Police spokesperson, Rabecca Ndiwate, the incident occurred on Saturday around 11:00 am.
Ndiwate explained that the mother and son were walking through Thuma Forest Reserve when they encountered the four elephants.
The elephants began to charge, and in the chaos, Adam tried to run away with her son, but they were trampled by the elephants.
The victims were rushed to Salima District Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Post-mortem results revealed that they died from severe injuries, including broken limbs and severe head trauma.
Adam and her son were from Namilaza Village, Traditional Authority Kambwiri in Salima District.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the risks of human-wildlife conflict in the area.
