MALAWI: Government Slashes Number of Principal Secretaries to Improve Efficiency
By Smile Hamilton
The government has reduced the number of Principal Secretaries from 80 to 38 in a move aimed at improving financial management and restoring sanity in the public service.
Chief Secretary to the Government, Justin Saidi, announced the development on Wednesday, saying the restructuring is intended to promote efficiency and ensure prudent use of public resources.
“This reform is about improving efficiency in the delivery of public services and ensuring that government resources are used responsibly,” said Saidi.
He stressed that the public service must be manned by competent officers who fully understand their responsibilities, noting that quality leadership is key to effective service delivery.
“Our civil service must be staffed with officers who are well conversant with their duties and are committed to serving Malawians with integrity,” Saidi said.
Speaking during an orientation for Principal Secretaries in government ministries and departments held in Lilongwe, Saidi challenged controlling officers to play a leading role in rebuilding the civil service.
“We expect you to help rebuild a public service that truly serves the will and interests of the people of Malawi,” he added.
Meanwhile, Secretary to the Treasury, Cliff Chiunda, said the government is implementing reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and ensuring discipline in public spending.
“These reforms are critical to economic stability, and as government we are committed to fully adhering to the changes being introduc
ed,” said Chiunda.
