MALAWI: Government Revokes Kaunjika Business Licenses, Orders Re-Application

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Ministry of Trade and Industry has announced the immediate revocation of all business licenses for Kaunjika Wholesalers and Retailers.
This drastic measure requires all businesses operating under Kaunjika to reapply for their licenses.
The decision to revoke the licenses was reportedly made in response to a demonstration by vendors in Lilongwe, who were protesting the rising prices of second-hand clothes bales.
The vendors are calling for urgent government intervention to address the price hikes.
As a result of the license revocation, Kaunjika Wholesalers and Retailers must cease operations until their licenses are reinstated.
Failure to comply may result in penalties, interruptions to business operations, and even criminal sanctions.
To reinstate their licenses, Kaunjika businesses must take steps to correct any violations and pay imposed fees. They may also need to reapply and provide evidence of compliance with the terms and conditions of the revocation.
The Ministry of Trade and Industry’s move has sent shockwaves through the business community, leaving many traders wondering about their future. The decision has raised concerns about the impact on the economy, particularly on small-scale traders and the informal sector.
