Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda has reignited the government’s appeal for loyal families to resolve chieftaincy disputes through traditional guidelines, rather than resorting to the courts.
Speaking at the installation ceremony of three traditional leaders in Lilongwe, Chimwendo Banda emphasized that development in many areas has been hindered due to disagreements over succession.
The installation ceremony marked a significant milestone for Traditional Authority (T/A) Kabudula, who has been embroiled in a lengthy court battle with opposing family members since 2020.
Two other traditional leaders, Stanely Phiri Zacharia and Kalodzera Kaliyolo, were also installed as Sub-T/A Zacharia and Sub-T/A Namaguya, respectively.
Acknowledging potential dissent, Chimwendo Banda urged those who may disagree with the decision to accept it.
He also stressed the importance of chiefs with large areas of land delegating authority to junior chiefs, promoting development and partitioning their areas for more effective governance.
The Minister’s call for traditional dispute resolution is a significant step towards promoting peace and stability in communities.
By encouraging families to resolve their differences through traditional means, the government aims to reduce the backlog of chieftaincy disputes in the courts and promote a more harmonious and cohesive society.
Moreover, the installation of new traditional leaders is expected to bring about positive change in their respective areas.
As custodians of tradition and culture, these leaders play a vital role in promoting development, resolving disputes, and preserving the cultural heritage of their communities.
Ultimately, the government’s initiative to promote traditional dispute resolution and the installation of new traditional leaders are crucial steps towards building a more peaceful, stable, and prosperous Malawi.
