The Football Legends Association on Wednesday hosted a memorial ceremony at Kamuzu Stadium in honour of Esau “Black Mamba” Kanyenda, the revered Malawian striker who died recently in England.

Former Flames stars, football officials and supporters gathered at the historic venue to celebrate the life of the 1982-born icon, whose blistering pace, determination and scoring power inspired an entire generation of young footballers.
In his eulogy, former Flames winger Fischer Kondowe described Kanyenda as “a committed fighter who never gave up on the pitch and carried the hopes of many Malawians with pride.” He added that Kanyenda’s discipline and passion made him a role model to many upcoming players.
Acting CEO of the Malawi National Council of Sports, Ivy Chinangwa, hailed the fallen legend as “a national treasure whose legacy transcended football.” She said Kanyenda’s contribution to the national team would remain a reference point for future talent.
Also speaking at the ceremony, representatives from the Football Legends Association highlighted Kanyenda’s humility, saying he remained connected to his community despite his international success. They noted that he always encouraged teamwork and unity among local players.
Supporters who attended the memorial shared emotional testimonies, recalling Kanyenda’s iconic goals and his trademark fighting spirit. Many said his influence went beyond the field, describing him as a man who united people through football.
The sombre yet dignified event, marked by solidarity and reflection, demonstrated the deep admiration Malawians held for the late star. His legacy continues to inspire both seasoned players and the upcoming generation across the country.
