MALAWI: Floods Hit Nsanje District as Heavy Rains Pound Southern Malawi

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in Nsanje District, leaving many areas waterlogged and vulnerable for further flooding.
The Nyankotola and Nyachipere rivers are among the most affected, with water levels rising rapidly following a heavy downpour that started on Tuesday evening.
The Lower Shire Valley, particularly the Mbenje area under Traditional Authority Ngabu, is one of the hardest-hit areas, with severe flooding reported.
Weather forecasts had predicted heavy rainfall in Nsanje, Chikwawa, and Blantyre, starting from Tuesday, due to a low-pressure system that has been building up in the region.
Residents have been advised to be on high alert and take necessary precautions to avoid being caught off guard by the floods.
The flooding has raised concerns about the potential for further disasters, particularly in low-lying areas along the Shire River.
The government and disaster management agencies have been urged to take immediate action to assist affected communities and mitigate the impact of the floods.
The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
