Farmers in Chiradzulu District Malawi, are facing a severe crisis as their crops are wilting due to a lack of rainfall.
The district has only received one significant downpour since the start of the rainy season, leaving farmers worried about their harvest.
Some farmers shared their plight with African Culture TV.
Mary Mbalati, from Nyakwawa village in the area of Traditional Authority Mpama, said that her maize, groundnuts, and beans are all struggling to survive due to the dry conditions.
“I planted my crops on time, but now they are all wilting because of the lack of rain,” Mbalati said.
Esther Mpira, another farmer from the same village, shared similar concerns.
“My rice crop is struggling to grow, and I’m worried that I will not be able to harvest anything if the rains don’t come soon,” Mpira said.
Traditional Authority Chitera of Chiradzulu District has appealed to non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders to assist farmers in the district with irrigation systems and other forms of support.
“We need help to ensure that our farmers have access to water for their crops,” Chitera said.
Yobu Kachiwanda, a meteorologist, said that the department is monitoring the situation and will provide updates on the rainfall patterns.
“We understand the concerns of the farmers, and we’re doing our best to provide accurate forecasts to help them plan,” Kachiwanda said.
In the meantime, farmers in Chiradzulu District are calling for urgent assistance to help them cope with the dry conditions and ensure a good harvest.
