Farmers in Malawi have expressed fears that they may end up selling their maize at lower prices than the costs they incurred in purchasing farm inputs.

One of the farmers in Kasungu, Muhammad Rafick, said the fears have been triggered by the change of leadership in the country.
“Currently, the price of maize has dropped from K75,000 to K65,000 here in Kasungu, which is raising fears that many of us farmers will not make much profit,” said Rafick.
In his remarks, Noah Suzgo Nhlane, Executive Director of Hoho Action Plus, has urged the incoming government to put in place strong policies that will enable farmers to benefit from their harvests.
Meanwhile, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson and newly elected Head of State, Peter Mutharika, through his representative Shadric Namalomba, said in Times Radio’s Kulinji program that their government will ensure that maize remains affordable.
