The Malawi Electoral Commission has underscored the significance of the 2019 presidential election nullification as a crucial lesson in adhering to electoral laws.
This reflection comes as the country prepares for the upcoming polls. The electoral commissioner, Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano emphasised the importance of awareness for the credibility of next year’s elections during a voter registration event.
The 2019 election nullification was a landmark moment in Malawi’s electoral history. The High Court of Malawi nullified the presidential election and ordered a fresh election, which was later confirmed by the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal.
As Malawi gears up for the polls, the commission is taking steps to ensure the integrity of the electoral process. The commission has unveiled a theme for the election and announced dates for voter registration.
Additionally, the commission is providing technical assistance to update and develop electoral procedures, promoting an environment of inclusivity, transparency, and accountability.
The MEC’s efforts aim to build public confidence in the electoral process, addressing concerns that arose during the 2019 elections. By prioritising electoral integrity and inclusivity, Malawi can ensure a free and fair election.
