Malawi’s Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, has challenged institutions of higher learning in East and South Africa, to prioritise strengthening their capacity to improve the quality of education and research.
Wirima made this call during the official opening of the Eastern and Southern Africa Higher Education Centres of Excellence Technical and Advisory Meeting in Lilongwe.
According to her, by focusing on quality education and research, institutions can empower students with the skills and knowledge needed to address local and global challenges.
This aligns with Malawi’s development blueprint, which aims to transform the country into a lower middle-income economy. Wirima has previously stressed the need for universities to be innovative and vibrant, engaging in real-life research that addresses societal needs.
Wirima emphasised the importance of centres of excellence in helping African countries achieve their development goals. She noted that these centres are crucial for driving growth and progress on the continent.
The meeting brought together delegates from Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Rwanda.
